Aims and scope

The South East European Journal of Economics and Business is a double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the University of Sarajevo – School of Economics and Business. The Journal advances knowledge and understanding of the economies and business environment of South East Europe (SEE). The Journal provides a platform for original research that explains how economies, institutions, firms, and individuals in the region develop, adapt, and compete, and that draws from the SEE experience lessons of relevance to emerging, transition, and converging economies worldwide.

Core Focus Areas
The Journal welcomes submissions across the fields of economics and business. Its core focus areas are:

  • Economics of Transition and Institutional Economics — the economics of transition and post-transition development, institutional quality and change, informality, governance, and the political economy of reform in South East Europe and comparable economies.
  • Growth, Development and Regional Integration — economic growth and development, income convergence, regional economics, and the economics of European and intra-regional integration for small open economies.
  • International Economics and Business — international trade and investment, global value chains, exchange-rate and competitiveness issues, and the internationalisation strategies of firms operating from and within the region.
  • Accounting, Finance, Banking and Insurance — accounting and financial reporting, corporate finance and financial management, banking, insurance, and financial development and inclusion in small open SEE economies.
  • Entrepreneurship and Strategic Management — entrepreneurship and SME development, business strategy, and the sources of firm competitiveness in emerging and converging markets.
  • Organisational Behaviour, Human Resources and Innovation — organisational behaviour, human resources management, innovation and its management, and their contribution to productivity and competitiveness.
  • Marketing Management — marketing strategy and consumer behaviour, including behavioural and experimental evidence on consumer, managerial and policy decision-making in the region.
  • Business Information Systems and Digitalisation — business information systems, the digital transformation of firms and public institutions, and the economic and managerial implications of new technologies.
  • CSR and Sustainability — corporate social responsibility, sustainable business practices, energy and the green transition, and the sustainability challenges of converging economies.

Regional Focus as an Analytical Asset

South East Europe offers a distinctive setting for economic and business research: a group of small, open economies that have undergone profound institutional transformation, that stand at different stages of European integration, and that combine shared history with diverse policy paths. The South East European Journal of Economics and Business treats this setting as an analytical asset rather than a geographical restriction, although it is primarily interested in contributions coming from South East Europe. Submissions may focus on individual countries of the region, offer intra-regional comparisons, or place SEE economies in a broader European or global comparative perspective; studies of other economies are welcome where they yield insights of clear relevance to the region.

Perspectives and Methodologies

The South East European Journal of Economics and Business welcomes theoretical contributions with clear conceptual frameworks; empirical studies based on robust quantitative, qualitative or mixed-methods designs; policy-oriented analyses with well-identified implications; and comparative and interdisciplinary research that deepens understanding across countries.

The South East European Journal of Economics and Business does not publish: purely descriptive or anecdotal case studies without analytical depth; manuscripts lacking clear theoretical grounding or identifiable contribution; purely technical or methodological exercises without substantive economic or business insight; or studies of narrowly local questions that do not articulate lessons for the wider region or an international readership.
